چکیده

Arbutus unedo is a Mediterranean shrub or tree that produces edible fruits with promising applications for the food industry and nutraceutical applications. A deep understanding of cell wall structure modifications its components during fruit softening would benefit development new products retail fresh fruits. Aiming to enhance valorization A. fruits, was characterized, first time, ripening. In this study, four distinct ripening stages (green, yellow, orange red) were considered. Several preliminary quality parameters determined. The nature compounds making part walls elucidated through Fourier?transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode (FTIR-ATR) spectral datasets analyzed using unsupervised principal component analysis (PCA). High-performance anion-exchange chromatography pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) employed assess monosaccharide composition, lignin measurements performed following acetyl bromide soluble methodology. addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed observe some relevant aspects microstructure Significant on composition these mostly found by end process when reached red-ripe stage. Glucose, xylose arabinose determined as major neutral sugars. Furthermore, assessment unveiled abundance aggregated sclereids, showed are highly lignified. richness monosaccharides, such glucose xylose, may suggest role displayed polyphenol hemicelluloses like xylans xyloglucans, which supported FTIR-ATR assignments. It hypothesised high amounts herein associated sclereids. Relevant data also obtained fundamental other Ericaceae berries.

Carotenoid composition of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) fruits.

The carotenoid composition of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) fruits has been characterised in detail and quantified for the first time. According to the total carotenoid content (over 340 μg/g dw), mature strawberry tree berries can be classified as fruits with very high carotenoid content (>20 μg/g dw). (all-E)-Violaxanthin and 9Z-violaxanthin were found to be the major carotenoid pigments, a...

Influence of Maturation Degree of Arbutus (Arbutus unedo L.) Fruits in Spirit Composition and Quality

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) is a small tree or shrub from botanical Ericaceae family that grows spontaneously nearby the Mediterranean basin and produce edible red fruits. A traditional processed fruit application, in Mediterranean countries, is the production of a spirit (known as aguardente de medronho, in Portugal) obtained from the fermented fruit. The main objective of our study...

The physico-chemical properties of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) fruits

The physico-chemical properties of ripe fruits of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) were determined. The water content, ash, crude fat, proteins, total phenols, sugar, and the content of vitamin C were determined in ripe strawberry tree fruits. Fruits contain 46.7 % of water, 23.5 % of soluble solids, 0.48 % of ash, 118.61 mg/100 g of potassium, 20.63 mg/100 g of sodium, 36.05 mg/100 g of calc...

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of flavonoids of the strawberry tree - Arbutus unedo L. (Ericaceae).

The leaves and fruits of strawberry tree - Arbutus unedo L., collected from two separate geographic locations in Croatia were investigated to determine their flavonoid composition and content. Quercitrin, isoquercitrin, hyperoside and rutin were identified in all leaf samples by means of thin-layer chromatography; the fruits contained only isoquercitrin. Chlorogenic acid was present in some lea...
